Always Say Yes

I have just returned from visiting a neighbor and friend who moved to the San Francisco area to be closer to her family.  I’ve written about her before, and this visit gave me an even greater respect and admiration for her lively spirit and resolve.

In a chef’s kitchen, there is an emphasis on mise en place—having all the ingredients measured, set aside and in their proper place—to make the meal preparation seamless.

Wilhelmina (who prefers to be called Willy) lives by that notion—with her special photos, collectibles and an array of unusual and precious items collected along the way starting in the Netherlands, Caracas to Curacao, Brazil to America.   Each is artfully placed around her new apartment to evoke a story, a memory or to simply bring joy,

Mid-morning, Willy has a second cup of espresso and a cookie.  Mid-afternoon, it’s time for herbal tea and a piece of chocolate. Before dinner, she has a glass of wine and a piece of smoked salmon with cream cheese on crackers. She attends a yoga and exercise class most days of the week and is in far better shape than any of her peers.  Most of all, she enjoys her frequent visits with her large family.

About 10 years ago, Willy became a widow.  She wasn’t used to being “in charge,” but learned and adapted very quickly.  A simple idea gave her the courage to go forward: A friend who had lost his spouse at about the same time told her that whenever she gets an invitation, always say yes—even if you don’t want to go.  And that is what she does.

Ever since, Willy has said yes—to challenges, to changes, to a new environment and to the discoveries it brings.

She is looking forward to her 90th birthday celebration in September when her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will gather in California and again in Tucson with friends.

Here’s to my dear friend, mentor and model—who is still saying yes.

Thank you for saying yes to our friendship all these years—and for believing that I can learn to speak Dutch!
